MVD - Case Study - Leaky Keg Machine Vision Inspection System

A large Brewer with breweries in a number of locations in Ireland and around the globe wanted to automate sections of their Kegging process but had concerns about potential Quality problems.

They approached MVD to install Inspection stations at key parts of their kegging lines to inspect beer kegs for leaks and to verify the text printed on the kegs.

Their specification demanded that the systems be able to run in a hostile industrial environment 24/7 with little or no Operator intervention.

Solution

Using Hi-Speed cameras and custom illumination to capture images of the kegs as they pass along the conveyor MVD’s custom vision algorithms guarantee the quality of the Kegging process. Leaky kegs and kegs with an incorrect date code or cap identifier are automatically shunted off the conveyor by a Robotic Arm and sent for repair while good kegs are allowed to continue.

Validation

We worked in partnership with the client to develop a detailed Functional Specification and carried the project through the Validation process and into Production.

Detection rate of ~1000 kegs/hour. (Typically determined by conveyor system.)

Inspection success of 99.5%

Interface to various PLCs or other control systems, Profibus, Modbus etc.

IP65-certified stainless-steel enclosure & CE certification.

Incorporates Area-scan industrial cameras & Industrial LED illumination.

Easy to use graphical touch-screen display used for setup and monitoring.
